The parachute cord I ordered from eBay arrived yesterday so I made more bracelets for giveaway to friends. Before I only have Olive Drab and Black paracord, now I have Neon Orange, White and Maroon. Red is out of stock from my eBay supplier.

Here they are. Two are with plastic buckles the rest have button clasp.

This is one my favorites, combination of Neon Orange, Olive Drab and Black.

Paracord Bracelet

Parachute cord or any rope or cord for that matter, is one important item in survival. It can be used for making shelter - to tie down your tarp, tent etc. It can be used for making bow for hunting or bow for making fire. Paracord has inner strands that you can pull out and use as fishing line, thread for repairing your clothing or your tarp. I always have a paracord in my bag together with other essentials for survival.

One way of carrying paracord with you is to make a bracelet out of it. That way it is always in your person ready to use when you need it.

Two paracord bracelets I made with buckles I bought from eBay. It's easy to make, took me just a few minutes to make one.

This bracelet has about 7 feet of paracord in it. All you have to do is unwound the bracelet to use it.

Neck Lance

I have seen this knife on several occasions before but I was not really interested in it because it looks quite fragile with its glass filled nylon handle and sheath. But when I saw the video of gavkoo and the mods he made on it, I realized it was a good quality affordable knife.

Comes in a hang package. Made in China.

6 1/8" OAL, 3" 440 stainless blade with bead blast finish. Black glass filled nylon handle with lanyard hole. Black glass filled nylon sheath with neck lanyard.

Three finger grip. Light and comfortable in the hands.

I'm sure ultralight backpackers would love this knife.

The necklance in its glass filled nylon sheath. Very good retention, no way the knife would fall out of the sheath on its own.

LRK

Maybe you're wondering what LRK stands for. It means Last Resort Knife, the name of the knife I bought from John Kiedaisch, a knifemaker from Mokena, Illinois. He owns JK Knives.

Simplicity is beauty - and for me nothing could be as simple and beautiful as this knife. Made of O1 steel, 4 1/2 overall length.

Convex edge with micro bevel, feels just right in my hands.

A close up of the blade and John's all too familiar logo. More pictures of the LRK here

Chinook Salmon

No, I'm not into fishing yet - though I'd love to. Maybe next year, I'll learn to fish the right way. Back in my country I use to fish using a bamboo stick or a long twig. No reel, no sinker, no bobber, etc., just stick, line, hook and bait. Understandably, I catch only small fishes like tilapia and gourami unlike this monstrous fish.

I'd say this fish weighs about 10 kilos. I skinned and filleted the fish and then broiled it in the oven.

And the head (we eat fish heads you know - yuck!) was made into a Filipino dish called sinigang. Sinigang is a soup or stew characterized by its sour flavor most often associated with tamarind. My brother said that when he first came to America in 1975, pink salmon fish heads are given away free. Now they cost $1.99 per pound courtesy of the Asians.

Dynamo Hand Crank Led Flashlight

I saw this hand crank flashlight from a video of a friend and I thought its a good addition to my survival gear. It doesn't need a battery, although I think there's a battery inside that is recharged by a dynamo that operates by hand cranking.

  • Key Features: Flashlight torch, Dynamo Flashlight
  • LEDs: 3 LEDs
  • Lumen Output: 10 Lumens
  • Bulb Type: High tech, ultra-bright LED
  • Light Color: White
  • Run Time: 30 seconds press=15 minutes of light
60 seconds press=25 minutes of light
  • Power Supply: Dynamo
  • Weight: 2.72 oz
  • Material: Plastic
  • Flashlight Life: 100, 000 hours
  • Body Color: Blue
  • Dimensions: 4" x 2" x 2" (L x D x D)

The hand crank lever comes out by pressing a button. It is not noisy when you crank it unlike the model owned by my friend. You continuously press then release this lever to run the dynamo.

The flashlight turned on. Very bright light from the 3 LEDs. The dynamo flashlight is ideal for camping, hiking, and emergency occasions

Svord Peasant Knife

The Svord BW Baker Peasant Knife is a bare bones basic utility-field knife based on models used in Bohemia and Bavaria 300-400 years ago.

Blade Length approx 3 1/4". Open Length approx 8 1/4". Closed Length (including extended tang) approx 7".

The handle is quite generous and would fit even those with large hands.

Sharpening Kit

Most knives I bought are sharp out of the box and all I need to do is to strop them to make them razor sharp. Others, I have to sharpen on the stone and then strop them afterwards. Here is my simple sharpening kit.

I'm not an expert on sharpening but I am able to make my knives really sharp using this kit. As shown above, I have a sharpening stone which I bought from Chinatown for about $3. It has a fine and coarse surface.

I have a strop that I made out of an old and unused leather belt tied to a piece of wood by a rubber band. For removing nicks and chips on the blade and sharpening my axe, I use a small Nicholson flat file. The tape on the picture, I can't remember what it is for. Maybe, if I cut myself while sharpening or maybe to put on the blade to prevent the coating from being scratched.

For stropping compound, I use rubbing compound, the type used for removing scratches on paints of cars. That's my sharpening kit, it works for me pretty well.

MTech Neck Knife Survival Kit

As I promised on my post last August 15, here is another article about this knife which I made into a survival kit.

The materials for the survival kit are, the knife itself, firesteel, button compass and a ranger band.

I just slipped the ranger band on the sheath and inserted the button compass at the front. The picture shows the button compass inserted underneath the ranger band.

And the firesteel at the back.

A close up of the firesteel.

How it looks like completely assembled and hanging on my neck. Cool?

MTech Neck Knife

First of all sorry for the bad pictures. I used my cellphone to take these pictures because my camera was borrowed by a friend. Anyway, I promise to post another blog about this neck knife soon.

440 Stainless Steel, Blade: 2 1/8" , Overall : 4-1/2", Sheath: Black Hard Nylon with neck cord, USA Design made in China.

Two finger grip, so handy and small . Sharp out of the box but needs further stropping.

Side by side with the RSK MK5. The sheath has a very good retention. It rattles a bit but won't fall off. Overall, an awesome cheap little knife. And by the way, the butt end is a bottle opener though I've never tried it yet.

CRKT Dogfish

The Dogfish, another affordable CRKT knife designed by Tom Krein, was so called because it has a dogfish face at the pommel which turns out to be a lanyard hole and bottle opener.

Made of 3Cr13 stainless steel, 2.25 inch blade with an overall length of 5.25 inches. It has a plain blade with a secure finger choil and friction grooves at the thumb spine near the butt. Comes complete with a Kydex sheath but does not have a very good retention however.

Sharp edge - small but feels comfortable in my hand.

I wrapped the handle with a paracord and made a lanyard loop. A very good value for the price.

I'm back ...

Wow its November 4, roughly 3 1/2 months have passed by without any post. Blame my work for it guys. Anyway, during that period of silence, I've acquired a lot of knives which I will post in the coming days. As you will notice I've dated this post in the month of July because I want to make 4 posts per month. I'll make up for the succeeding months with as I have said, posts about the knives I acquired.

Welcome back, guys. Lol.

ANZA Knife

Most Anza Knives are made from steel files that has been annealed, cold ground and polished but this one is made from 1095 high carbon spring steel.

It comes with a high quality leather sheath.

Model TB-1: 6 1/8" OAL, 3" blade length, 2 1/2", Width 15/16", Thickness 0.04".

The knife fits the sheath very well. Very good retention.

This Anza knife is really sharp. It can shave off my hair in a cinch because the blade is quite thin. I think this knife will be good for food preparation, skinning small game animals and what else - shaving hair of course.

Homesick

I'm having an attack of homesickness. I really, really miss my country and longs to be home. I feel like a prisoner who wants to be with his love ones but can't. And so just relive his happy memories with them.

This Visayan song sung by simple provincial folks is somewhat like that. Its title's English translation is "Christmas in Prison".
